How watching porn can make you a better UX designer

Yes, you read it right.

The internet is for porn — porn and cats. The web basically grew up with porn and is a symbiosis almost as strong as the one between the internet and cats. Of course, pornography has been present since the beginning of humanity and can be already found as drawings on cave walls from our ancestors. But let’s be real: We can be lucky that we can access our beloved porn with a few clicks on our screens now rather than awkwardly purchasing a physical copy in a store as the poor generations before us had to do.

Of course, there will always be people out there who say that watching porn is addictive, leads to erectile dysfunction, will ruin your kids, your relationships and your life, will get you to hell and make you blind.

However, it turns out that watching porn does not only stimulate our deepest, most primitive desires but also has many other benefits you wouldn’t expect.

If you are not “one of those people” who solely watches porn to satisfy their basic needs, you can now justify doing it by telling yourself that you will become a better UX designer. Here are 6 reasons why.

As a UX designer, it is crucial to focus on what matters and solve problems. If you experience stress or tension, it can hinder your performance massively.

Being stressed makes the brain release cortisol- a hormone which blocks our problem-solving ability and makes us unable to think clearly (and also makes us gain weight, but that’s not important here). Cutting the level of cortisol will, of course, eliminate those issues and research suggests that watching porn can help with exactly that.

For example, a study conducted by the Carnegie Mellon University shows that people who were exposed to pornographic content had a 50% lower cortisol level and did a lot better on a math test compared to the control group. Cool, right?

So next time you’re stressed, you know now what to do.

Everyone has their sexual ticks. For some, it’s feet, for others it’s clowns, and some just need a deep and loving romance. No matter what a person is into, there is an almost infinite amount of content which caters towards everyone’s individual needs.

Having access to so much choice also means that there are countless possibilities to explore new things you haven’t thought about before. Watching porn can make you more open-minded, give new ideas and inspire to experiment. Consequently, it leads to having less fear to try out something new.

Once you’ve lost your fears in the safe space of porn, you will definitely become braver to experiment in other areas of your life and will get inspired by the joy of trying out new stuff.

To be honest, paying attention to composition and perspective probably isn’t the first thing that comes to mind when opening a porn clip. However, it might be worth it to look for some inspiration here.

The way most porn videos are filmed is a very straightforward one: You see what you have to see for the purpose of the video to be fulfilled. Sometimes, the best way to approach and show things is to keep it simple.

When you watch porn that you like, pay attention to how the feelings, ideas or images that you came for (no pun intended) are transferred through the perspective, compositions and views. Just try it out and incorporate this task to observe on your next private meeting with your screen.

We already covered the aspect of exploring and experimenting with the help of porn, but the idea goes even further than that. It can help you to become generally more creative.

It is common sense that watching porn is arousing- if it wouldn’t turn people on, pornography would never be this popular. There are several studies which show that consuming porn raises your libido and sexual desire for quite some time. Without diving too deep into biology, it can be said that the rise of certain hormones that come with a higher libido does have a significant impact on creativity.

Just think about great artists from the past. Many of them were inspired by their sexual passion and desires, and through that, they created amazing pieces of art and music. Sexuality and creativity were always going hand in hand. For example, according to psychological research at the Newcastle University, creative people had on average twice as much sexual interaction than others and in turn, feel more inspired by these interactions.

Of course, browsing through your favourite porn site and finding your hand in your pants does not replace the passion that comes with actual human interaction, but it can most certainly help to reinforce your sexuality.

Being a UX designer means to understand how to cater towards people’s wishes and expectations. Sounds familiar?

When you look through different porn sites, it might come to your attention that many feature quite similar interfaces. It is so easy to find the content you desire through its predictive search functionality and discover new content based on current trends or what genre you are looking for.

The content is organized in a way that is useful to you as well as the site itself. Your behaviour is taken into account as it is pretty clear that you only watch the content that you want to watch. This way the site can use this information and provide you with related, additional content that you probably want to see too.

Next time you are scrolling through a porn site, pay attention to the way you are actually finding what you were looking for (and probably even more).

No matter what our preference is when it comes to porn, we somehow react to what we see on the screen. This is due to the fact that what we see stems from basic, instinctive behaviours that are somewhere deep inside us. In porn, we give in to those behaviours and eliminate any societal boundaries that might hinder us from exploring things in our everyday life.

The people that we see in porn (let’s imagine that those aren’t paid actors) interact in a very straightforward, almost primitive way that to a certain extent really speaks to us and our desires.

Taking that into account, we can see that human interaction doesn’t have to be complicated and complex. Sometimes it is more than enough to follow your instincts.

As a UX designer, you are dealing with real people with actual needs and expectations. So always keep in mind that keeping it simple and straightforward will benefit your user most to interact with the interface. When you want to watch something specific on a porn site, you don’t want to be lead to some stuff you don’t want to see, right?

And in case you haven’t noticed yet, watching porn is nice and you can learn a lot more than you think.

Most of the research was actually saying that porn will ruin your life and you will go to hell (haha) but check these:
